About Maker Space

broken.jpg Makerspace – a community center with tools, equipment, community, and education for the purposes of enabling community members to design, prototype and create manufactured works that wouldn’t be possible to create with the resources available to individuals working alone.

  • sharing space and tools
  • providing access to equipment, community, and education
  • design, engineering, fabrication and education
  • Makerspace Playbook – guide

K-8 schools makers – why

  • self-directed, interesting, engaging, challenging, new experience for many
  • design thinking, prototype, failure, innovation, evaluation, revision
  • learn to use tools, hand-eye coordination, make something physical, visualization, spatial thinking
  • follow directions > 3D, experiment, test many ideas
  • low cost, easy, little or no set-up

Rules

  • don’t be evil, do no harm, play nicely with others, share, don’t hijack someone else’s project
  • listen, observe, ?
  • provide constructive criticism, feedback – accept / give
  • gracious professionalism
  • put stuff back, clean up after yourself
  • donate stuff, keep materials / tools refilled
  • “I failed today :o)”

Maker movement – a tech-influenced DIY (Do It Yourself) community. Ingenious makers and innovative technologies such as the Arduino microcontroller and personal 3D printing are driving innovation in manufacturing, engineering, industrial design, hardware technology and education.

Maker Faire – Part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new, Maker Faire is an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students, and commercial exhibitors.

Tinkering

  • Tinkercad

Getting started – Kits are available, or parts can be purchased separately, or as kits and modified, to build projects less expensively or in different more creative ways.

  • handy tools
  • basic materials
  • commercial, school, community – MakerKids tools – extensive lists

Do It Yourself (DIY)

  • Magazines – Popular Mechanics, MAKE magazine
  • Books –
  • Boy Scouts
  • kits – Radio Shack, Heathkit

Technologies

  • Arduino microcontroller
  • personal 3D printing
  • Scratch – from MIT – programming

MakerSpace is a place to have an opportunity to explore technology interests, learn to use tools and materials, and develop creative projects with programing, electronics and other technologies. There are workshops to learn new things and complete fun projects paving the way to building your own projects with provided tools and machines.
