Ruth Davis (1928-2012)
After becoming the first woman to earn a PhD in mathematics at the University of Maryland, Ruth Davis began working for the Navy, where she created the first computer codes for nuclear reactor design as well as some of the first computer software for defense programs and space operations.
At the age of 27, Davis became the technical director of a program designed to create a system to manage the operations of the Navy around the world. She would go on to hold positions at the National Bureau of Standards; the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare; the National Library of Medicine; and the Intelligence and Reconnaissance section of the Department of the Navy.
